I am a Social Worker whose scope of practice is in mental health with a specialization in dual diagnosis. Dual diagnosis is someone who has a mental health disorder and a substance abuse or dependence disorder.

This picture was taken by my brother at my graduation from The Ohio State University. President George Bush was the speaker and this was 2002, nine months after 9/11. We had to be at the campus by 6:00 in the morning to go through metal detectors.

I got contacts and lost weight since this picture. I swear! So I was tired due to getting up early.  And, I was offended because I felt my first amendment rights had been violated. The day before, at our graduation rehearsal the vice president for student affairs had threatened to take our diplomas away if we protested in any way. So on the way out of Ohio Stadium, I see this guy with a sign “Bush Makes Me Nervous.” How could I resist?

I began using Madrigal Maniac as my alter ego probably in 1995. I used it as a handle on message boards and on various web sites I had designed. I first heard the word madrigal in a Genesis song called Entangled from the 1976 masterpiece “A Trick of the Tail.” The first album post Peter Gabriel. I used maniac because, quite frankly, I’m crazy:

Definition of Madrigal:

1. A little amorous poem, sometimes called a pastoral poem, containing some tender and delicate, though simple, thought.

2. (Mus.) An unaccompanied polyphonic song, in four, five, or more parts, set to secular words, but full of counterpoint and imitation, and adhering to the old church modes. Unlike the freer glee, it is best sung with several voices on a part. See Glee.

Why use a pseudonym? I like what Pho said on his blog Pho’s Akron Pages. He said he belongs to several organizations and he does not want others to think that when he is giving his personal opinions, he is speaking for one of those organizations. He feels a pseudonym helps do that and I agree.

If you’ve read the blog at all it’s obvious I’m a progressive. However, I have not drank the Kool-Aid. I will criticize Democrats when they are wrong and congratulate Republicans when they are right.

P.S. Bill Cosby was my undergrad speaker. He had a better message and was more inspiring.

P.P.S. Since this picture I have gotten contacts, lost weight, and had some sleep.
